ks5 news news & events duke of edinburgh’s awards evening 2018 j twynham on may 2, 2018 on 29th april 2018, the sir bobby robson ballroom at st george’s park hosted john taylor high school’s annual duke of edinburgh’s award presentation evening. the event provided an opportunity for parents, jths staff and dofe volunteers and leaders to join students from years 10 to 13 as they collected their awards. it was an amazing evening with 106 students receiving their bronze awards, 46 students receiving their silver awards and a very impressive 22 students receiving their gold awards. gold award recipients, lizzie and lorna expertly hosted the evening. an inspiring speech, given by mr john mcavoy, taught students the importance of building a legacy that lasts by helping others. as well as the main awards, two very special awards were presented. year 11 student lois received the colin kellett memorial award for outstanding contribution. lois, who received her silver award, so impressed the leaders and volunteers by her determination and leadership qualities that the award, usually reserved for a gold award recipient, was presented to her. lois also delivered a passionate account of how dofe has impacted so positively on her as an individual. the second special award, the holly brown memorial award, was presented to bronze group 2 who were recognised by leaders in in having gone beyond what is usually expected of a team when completing their expeditions. presented for the first time this year, this award has been introduced to remember holly who tragically lost her life in july last year, the day before she was due to embark on her bronze expedition. holly was part of group 2 and they completed their expedition in september and are deserved recipients of this award. fund-raising is a central part of the dofe programme in its aim to allow young people to support others less fortunate than themselves. this year has been no exception and it was with gratitude that £1000 raised in donations was presented to the footprints orphanage charity in kenya. whilst praise should go to the students for their amazing achievements, huge thanks must also go to martin and karen hulbert and their team of volunteers. without their unwavering support for the students and the hundreds of hours of time they commit each year to training the students, this valuable extra-curricular activity would not be possible. thank you also to mr fogarty for his work in promoting dofe to our students in school. event ks3 news & events y8 kingswood trip 2018 a duncan on april a duncan on april 20, 2018 magistrates mock trial in march, a team of fifteen year 8 and year 9 pupils took part in the regional heat of the magistrate mock trial competition at derby magistrates’ court. the competition aims to replicate a courtroom experience, with pupils taking the part of lawyers, witnesses, usher, legal adviser, magistrates and courtroom artists. our team was split into prosecution and defence teams and were given the details of a case to prepare: sam fenton, played by harriet in year 8, was accused of carrying a knife in a public area without due reason. our prosecution lawyers, louis and laura set out to prove the case, using the statements of their prosecution witnesses alex and maisie who convincingly testified that harriet’s character was definitely carrying a knife and was a huge danger to society. defending harriet, isabelle and eden set out a staunch defence using the witness statements for the characters played by harriet and katie. on the day, our teams were pitched against opposing teams from other schools and they presented the cases in front of magistrates who were also judging their performance. alice, as the usher, ensured that the courtroom ran smoothly and according to protocol and imogen, our legal advisor, expertly guided the magistrates on matters of law. our magistrates – charlotte, katie and hannah – sat with a real magistrate and at the conclusion of the case, debated the outcome, eventually delivering a verdict based on the evidence they had heard. on the day, our team were narrowly beaten into second place, but they should all feel really proud of themselves for the immense hard work that went in to preparing for the day and for their poise, confidence and coolness under fire in an adversarial courtroom setting. they really were a credit to themselves and to jths. the judges commented on how well they had practised and on the professionalism of their performance. next year, we will be returning to win! in the meantime, charlotte and emily have been entered into a national competition for their artistic impressions of the courtroom, and we eagerly await the results, which should be announced in may. we would also like to thank mrs richardson, jths governor and local magistrate, who arranged a trip for the team to the court prior to the event and very generously gave her time to watch the team practise and to share her expertise with the team. ms j budge community ks3 ks4 ks5 news & events practice and procedures – snow jtmat on december 6, 2017 it is our intention where possible to continue to open as normal during periods of inclement weather. we take our responsibilities to educate and care for young people seriously, and are aware of the impact on parents and carers if the school is closed at short notice. however, careful assessment needs to be made about whether opening in snowy conditions is appropriate. there are several factors to consider. these include: the severity of the weather at the time the forecast and likelihood of an improvement or deterioration in the weather the condition of the school site, and our ability to offer lessons as normal access to the school via local and regional roads for staff and pupils [please note that significant numbers of pupils use local bus services, and as such the ability of the bus companies to offer a normal service is an important consideration] we endeavour to provide parents with as much notice as we can. our website (www.jths.co.uk) is regularly updated during periods of poor weather. we also put notification about closure on our official facebook page (“john taylor high school newsfeed”), on twitter (@johntaylorhigh) and we send a text message to parents. on days of potential difficulty due to snow, early inspection of the site is conducted and an initial decision is taken, dependent upon the above factors. please note however this decision will be reviewed throughout the day as these factors are subject to change: the weather may deteriorate; the forecast may change; the ability of bus companies to operate may change or unforeseen other factors may impact on our ability to operate. therefore we may be forced to close – even during the course of a school day. again, we will always try to provide parents with as much notice as possible, and make every effort to ensure pupils and staff can leave the school and return home safely. sometimes these judgments are difficult. we appreciate your patience and understanding at these times. j twynham head of school news & “distinction*/distinction” awards – an increase on the previous year. mrs spencer, director of post 16 said “we are very proud of this level of outstanding performance and these results are testament to the hard work of our students and the staff that have supported them so diligently this year. competitive universities and apprenticeship providers no longer base their judgements on academic performance alone. they want students to demonstrate a passion for their chosen subject. we encourage and equip our sixth formers to go well beyond an a level specification. this year’s students have been able to draw on their success in prestigious research placements, national competitions and on their extensive reading and independent research. we are also delighted with the achievement of individual students who have overcome personal difficulties or tragedies with the help of pastoral and support staff”. “these achievements are testament to the incredible hard work and ability of our students”, said john taylor’s principal mike donoghue. “comparisons with the results of last year, the first year of the new specifications with more challenging content and a different assessment regime, are largely positive – which has to be a cause of celebration.” “we’ve seen nationally a considerable amount of turbulence in examination performance, and i note the news headlines today suggest that this year may be no different. but our students continue to perform very impressively. we attribute this to their tenacity to succeed, and the highest expectations our staff have for them, coupled with incredible support from their families. it’s no secret formula, but it’s a winning one. i firmly believe that there is nowhere better for sixth form studies in staffordshire. “it has been wonderful to see our students in school this morning, thanking the staff for their support, encouragement and expertise as they collect their results. i would like to thank the ‘class of 2017’ for the massive contribution they have made to school life here at john taylor. they have been amazing, and i know that they will go on making a great difference to those with whom they study, work and socialise. “we send them all our congratulations and every best wish for continued success in further study and employment.” prospective parents are invited to open evenings of october 12 for the sixth form and october 19 for year 7 anyone interested in joining the sixth form should email [email protected] . applications for 2017 are still being accepted. community ks3 ks4 ks5 news important: our telephone numbers are changing! jtmat on june 26, 2017 why are our numbers changing? staffordshire county council (scc) have decided to withdraw their telephony service to schools at the end of the current contract due to the diminishing role the local authority has within schools and academies. unfortunately the school has never owned its own numbers and due to technical reasons scc cannot transfer our existing numbers to the trust’s chosen provider, entrust education . all schools within who subscribe to the current scc telephony service are in the same position as john taylor high school. when are our numbers changing? our numbers are due to change on the 4th august 2017 . the actual migration process will begin at 4:30pm on the previous day and will be completed before 9am on the 4th august 2017. what are our new numbers? we have decided to publish our two main numbers for parents. please update our contact information as soon as possible on or after 4th august 2017: main school number: 01283 247800 student absence line: 01283 247858 what happens if i phone the old school numbers after we have migrated? if you contact the old main school number (01283 239300) after we have migrated you will be prompted to redial our new number. we have taken the decision not to auto forward calls to our new number as this does not encourage parents, suppliers and other contacts to update their details. if you contact any other number after the migration you will hear silence; no dial tone or no line busy tone. are there any cost savings associated with the new system? yes. due to john taylor’s unique position in the trust (jtmat) we have been able to secure discounts that will reduce our on-going telephony costs by approximately £2 per handset per month combined with a comprehensive call package. community ks3 ks4 ks5 news john taylor mat successful in free school bid jtmat on april 12, 2017 john taylor mat successful in free school bid 12 th april all to make its children academically successful and personally well-rounded – young people that their parents, and we, can be proud of. the first steps on that journey started some time ago with our vision for the new school, and our pace will now quicken with this approval of our plans. our application team have worked tirelessly towards today, and this is a much-deserved reward for their efforts. the group now becomes the delivery team, and i’m incredibly fortunate to be working alongside them. we have a busy time ahead!” chair of john taylor mat, gareth moss added: “we are delighted that the achievements demonstrated within our existing schools have been reflected with this prestigious appointment to run the new school in tatenhill. our proposal was based on providing the best possible education to this new school and we look forward to being an integral part of the new community. the trust and staff are delighted with this success and we will make the school one that we can all be proud of. this achievement would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of all of the staff across the trust and i would like to thank them for their determination to provide the best education possible for our pupils.” the trust has been recording interest in the free school from prospective parents, prospective staff and the wider community via its website:
